Ystradgynlais is the largest town in the upper Swansea Valley and one of the most proudly Welsh-speaking communities in Powys. It grew on coal and kept its character long after the collieries closed — a working valley town with a strong sense of itself, famous in art circles as the place the Polish émigré painter Josef Herman settled and worked for a decade, drawn by the light and the miners.
